Designing terminal dock space for decades of passenger growth

Outcome
-40% delivery vehicles via design levers

The context

Major Australian international airport — terminal expansion.

Passengers projected 12.1M to 24.4M and outlets 46 to 70 by 2040. The key dock was height-constrained and reliant on informal spillover space the expansion removes; truck demand +47% and waste +65%, with waste areas already at capacity.

What we did

  • Six-week goods & waste discovery and 30% concept design support
  • Mapped current demand across all docks and modelled 2040 growth
  • Assessed operational levers, a retail logistics centre and delivery-to-outlet / dock management model
  • Sized waste space needs against the precinct waste strategy
  • Produced spatial estimates for two dock scenarios, to bay, staging, screening and circulation level, plus KPIs and roadmap

The results

  • Levers cut growth impact: ~40% fewer delivery vehicles, ~30% less staging space
  • New dock sized ~898 sqm with RLC vs ~1,457 sqm without, plus ~325 sqm added waste space
  • Scenario-based evidence to progress design from 30% to 60% concept
